In today’s world of design, its almost standard that every designer has a blog to accompany their portfolio. Starting your own blog as a freelancer is the new wave of displaying your work and sharing your knowledge amongst the community and potential clients. It wasn’t until I launched vectornpixel.com when I noticed the demand in sharing information throughout the community and how helpful it is to our fellow designers as well.
But it isn’t that easy. Launching vectornpixel.com has been one of the most difficult challenges ive ever had to face within web design. Its so many steps that must be taken for you to launch your blog successfully if you want to have some sort of impact. This is a road that im still continuing which could lead me to success. I only found it right to share this knowledge that I have learned while doing research and experimenting myself. In this article i have complied a list of very useful tips that will inspire you to not only begin your own design or web blog in general but the steps to take that could in fact make it successful.
Branding & Design
The first most important thing while beginning your blog is branding. Finding a name for your blog is key while finding your niche is one of the most important elements. Having a successful blog by finding your target audience will separate you from the norm. Its hundreds of design blogs out there, but finding a specific design style and writing about it could gain you the audience that your looking for. It is a few exceptions to this. In order to receive the level of viewers that really successful blogs have, you must also include general topics.
I found it useful to have my main articles and showcases relating to edgy forms of designs. At the same time, I like to throw a couple of general topic ideas in the mix to get a wider viewership. If I continue to write articles about grunge, or urban type of designs, ill mix it up so it could be well praised by the general public. The design speaks for itself. Your blog design should reflect on the type of content that you post on your blog. Seeing that I want to include edgy designs but also more general commercial or corporate type of media, I tried to have a nice balance between the two, and it worked like a charm !
Write For Other Blogs
Writing for other blogs could be the stepping stone that you need to make your blog have an average readership, to overnight success. Many new authors may contact a blog that receive a lot of hits to ask if they could contribute for their site in exchange for promotion. This technique has its advantages. Getting your articles on another site that receive thousands of hits could boost the traffic to your site and almost immediately put your blog on the map. You have to take in consideration the type of article that you do want to contribute. I have learned that making a general design article benefits more than a niche article. I found this out by writing my first contribution.
I originally thought since this article has never been written before and its about a new CMS which is very popular, the article was going to boost my traffic beyond belief. But instead I didnt receive the outcome as i wanted. From then on I make sure my contributions not only fit the theme of the blog, but its something that is of interest to everyone and not a specific group. The best part is, as your name as an author gets out there, alot of bigger blogs will contact you personally.
Comment On Other Blogs
This technique believe it or not is very effective. Commenting on blog posts allows other bloggers to see what your all about. You must use this to your advantage as well. Writing a informative comment will gran the attention from others which would make them check your website out. The best thing about commenting on other blogs is if you have published a similar article as the one your commenting about. It makes it easier and it almost grabs those viewers to check out your post to gain more information.
Using Facebook For Promotion
Facebook usage is very good for article promotion. Becoming member of groups similar to your blog topic, starting events that allows you to message everyone on your friends list, and sharing your daily blogs on your page is effective ways of letting users know about your blog. If you do not have many friends on your facebook, its best to add as many as your possibly can that relates to your blog in order to grab new followers.
Be Active On Twitter
Twitter is more powerful that many may think. You know the funny thing is, when I first started hearing about how twitter is a good tool for your blog promotion, I couldnt understand why. But now seeing the features and how you can use this social network for spreading the word, it had made my readership grow tremendously. The first step is to creative an account if you do not have one. Creating your twitter name is another form of branding, with that being said you twitter name should follow the name of your blog or your design nickname. One of the first things you should do on twitter for promotion is to use its search feature to add members that relates to you. In my case i searched for graphic and web designers and everyday i try to add at least 50 users.
One of the next steps is to add twitter plugins and features on your blog. Using the retweet feature is really one of the best features you can use for article promotion. This feature allows your viewers to retweet your post on their twitter page. This spreads the word to their followers and attracts people to your page. Communicating with other bloggers is another step towards promotion as you can network with them about articles or even contributions, but the best part of that is linking to each other.
Using Keywords
SEO is whats going to make your articles become easy to find on google and other search engine. Its very important to use keywords that relates to your article in the Topic and the actual post. Using SEO plug-ins on word press is effective and will have your blog show up in the top results. But at the same time you want to maximize this as much as possible. You have the possibility of showing up in the top 5 ranking if you effectively use keywords within your content.
Writing Quality Content
Writing quality content is whats going to keep your blog in it for the long haul. Mark my words, as long as you produce quality material you will have success with your blog and it will not take long. The articles on your blog should reflect the demand of the industry. I felt it was a huge demand for articles that relates to edgy design styles. You barely see any, and its rare that authors gives urban design itself any credit. What people failed to realize is that urban design is a whole new faction, we serve as our own community and its very big.
How can people not give credit to the designers who create graphics for some of the biggest entertainers? I came in wanted to spread that message, so the content i created for vectornpixel.com was based on entertainment, grunge, urban and other edgy design styles. When you write niche content like this, it becomes successful because its not a lot written about it. So the lesson learned here is write useful articles which has a demand that also isnt written by others, its going to be hard but at least write it in a different way.
Linking to Other Blogs
It could become hard to get links from other blogs who are already successful. The key to getting linked from another blog again is to have quality content and a cool website. Once your website becomes popular it will be easy to gain the respect from other blogs which will in part link to you. Linking to those blogs also will serve its purpose.
Post Articles Frequently
This could be one of the very well things that could get you hundreds of visitors quick. Publishing a lot of content will improve your page ranking and also makes it easy to find you on the search engines. The keywords to your articles will serve its purpose while people search on the Internet for various of things that relates to your article. Its best that you write as much as you can without burning yourself out. For a new blog, you should try to write one article minimum for each day of the week until you become noticed. The easiest way ive found to mass produce quality articles is to have certain days for particular posts, like freebies or even write showcases and lists. Lists are very popular and will in turn grab hundreds of visitors to your blog.
Article Promotion Techniques
Its various of article promotion techniques. This calls for a whole other article to really elaborate on this topic. But once you publish your article is various things you should do once its out there to the public. Submitting your article to social media sites such ass digg, stumple upon, will receive a lot of attention to your blog if its voted up. This also goes for designbump, design float and other similar sites. Its very easy to get your site in the top ranking of design float by adding the icon to your page.
Another great tool i use to promote my site is the community news feature on other blog sites. This has single handily saved my blog and has made it instantly successful. Submitting your news to blog sites will allow the blog owners to publish your link on their page. This is often seen by hundreds of viewers which will in part visit your article and then, instantly a new reader is added to your website.
